OMG We’re going to the U.S. Open
A couple of months ago, a couple of friends and I had the opportunity to attend the U.S. Open for the first time. Pinch me, it was so surreal! As first-timers at a golf tournament, we were buzzing with excitement and started diving into research—what to wear, what to expect, and how to prepare for the weather. Our search for advice from previous attendees didn’t yield much, so I’m here to share what we learned to help future attendees.
What to wear: Dress like you’re going to play in the tournament.
Golf Polo or Blouse: Choose a breathable and stylish polo or blouse.
Skorts/Shorts/Pants: Skorts or golf shorts are great for warmer weather and while lightweight pants or capris are good for cooler days.
Comfortable Footwear: Wear comfortable, supportive shoes like golf shoes or athletic sneakers—definitely avoid heels or wedges.
Hat/Visor: A hat or visor can help shield you from the sun.
Sunglasses: Sunglasses are essential for eye protection.
Tips:
Check the weather forecast and be prepared with layers if it’s chilly in the morning or evening. -
Prioritize comfort since you'll be on your feet a lot.
Sunscreen is a must to protect your skin.
*I would also suggest avoiding overly casual attire like jeans, flip-flops or sports jerseys.
What to expect: A Lot of People and Moving Parts.
Before the Tournament:
1. Tickets and Parking: Purchase your tickets in advance and familiarize yourself with parking options. Parking can fill up quickly, so arrive early or consider alternative transportation.
2. Security Checks: Be prepared for security screenings. Prohibited items include large bags, outside food and beverages, and large umbrellas. I would suggest checking the tournament's website for a complete list of prohibited items.
At the Tournament:
1. Arrival: Arrive early to find parking, get through security, and explore the course. We struggled with parking and eventually opted to Uber from a local grocery store—a decision we’re glad we made.
2. Course Layout: Use the course map provided with your ticket, available online or on large signs around the course, to navigate to your favorite holes or areas where players are expected to be.
3. Food and Drinks: There are food and beverage stands, but prices can be high. Bring a refillable water bottle if permitted—this was a lifesaver during the hot weather.
4. Seating and Viewing: Seating is often first-come, first-served, so get to your desired spot early. You can also move around to view different holes and groups of players.
5. Weather: Be prepared for changing weather conditions. Wear appropriate clothing, including layers and rain gear if needed, and stay hydrated. The weather was extremely hot when we attended.
6. Etiquette: Maintain silence and stay still while players are taking their shots. Avoid walking across the putting greens or in players’ line of sight. Don’t worry there will be people letting you know when it’s safe to cross.
7. Pro Shop and Merchandise: Pro shops or merchandise tents offer U.S. Open memorabilia. Items can be pricey but make great souvenirs. However, American Express cardholders were given free drinks and mini-radios to listen to the game.
8. Player Interaction: While autographs may be unlikely, you might catch a glimpse of players as they move between holes. Be respectful and give them space.
9. Getting Around: Comfortable shoes are a must, there’s a lot of walking involved!
10. End of the Day: Expect large crowds leaving simultaneously. Plan ahead to avoid traffic and get back to your car or public transportation smoothly. Leaving before the crowds made our drive home much easier.
Overall Experience:
The U.S. Open is a lively and energetic event with passionate golf fans. You’ll witness top-level competition and enjoy a vibrant sports environment. It’s an unforgettable experience and well worth the visit!
Enjoy!
